224) love poetry

the literary life 2/14/10

My favorite love poem of all time is Shakespeare's Sonnet 116. When I was in high school, I had this poem displayed on my red binder all sophomore year; I wrote on the cover with black marker. Then I copied the poem on to a piece of notebook paper and kept it in my journal. For years, I have returned to this poem again and again: first as a student, then a teacher, and now as a poet. The message, as they say, is cliche: love is eternal. But maybe there's something about the authority of the concluding couplet that has always inspired me. Anyway, here's the link:
